Natural girls can wear pixies too! Here’s how
We know our The Cut Life stunners absolutely love pixies, and we do too! They’re a classic cut, relatively simple to maintain and look great on a variety of face shapes. But, there’s one misconception that stops some stunners from becoming #teampixie — the idea that you must get a relaxer to achieve the look. For some ladies, that’s no problem, but if you’d rather be natural, that can cause a little anxiety.
Well, we’re here to prove that you don’t have to get a relaxer to rock a pixie! Here’s how:
Have your stylist cut your hair while it’s curly. This will ensure that you get the best shape and that your hair will still look great when you wear it curly. When you straighten the hair first and then cut, your hair may look uneven once it reverts back to its natural state. Of course, after your stylist straightens your hair, they may have to do a little bit of trimming to make sure everything is perfectly even, but that shouldn’t impact the look of your curls when you decide to wear them.
Invest in small barrel curling irons and flat irons. This is especially important if you plan to do a lot at-home styling and only visit your stylist every few weeks or once a month. When I had a natural pixie, I tried to use the same tools I had when I had longer hair — stupid, I know — and I would get frustrated when I couldn’t get my hair bone straight. You’ll need a flat iron with an 1-inch plate, and you may even want to get a mini-sized travel flat iron that can get those super short strands. You’ll also need small barrel curling iron in a 3/4 or 1-inch size.
Learn how to mold the back and sides. If you went super short on the back and sides of your hair, then a flat iron, no matter how small, won’t particularly give you that “laid” look. So, you’ll have to learn how to lay your hair down using a molding technique. The products you use will vary on your curl type, but it’s a great way to get the job done with little to no heat!
Wrap it up! Every black girl knows the key to keeping a style fly for as long as possible is wrapping your hair up at night. By wrapping your hair at night with a silk scarf, of course, you’ll keep your edges sleek and healthy, so all you have to do in the morning is get up and go!
Lastly, you don’t have to straighten your hair at all to wear a pixie. You can use a molding technique all over your hair for a wavy, gorgeous look.
