Our 8 favorite looks from the 2017 Emmys

By  |

Last night, the 2017 Emmys took place, and #blackexcellence was all over the place, from Donald Glover and Lena Waithe’s historic wins to Anika Noni Rose and Cecily Tyson’s sweet moment on stage. But, we also enjoyed seeing some of our favorite stunners grace the red carpet as they gave us plenty of hair and fashion envy.

Anika Noni Rose

Anika debuted her new, short style at BET’s Black Girls Rock! awards last month, and it looks like her natural curls and shaved sides will be around for awhile! Her stylist @cynthiaglam added a side part and expertly slicked down Anika’s baby hairs. According to Cynthia’s Instagram, she used Dove’s Quench Absolute Curls Creme Serum to create Anika’s carefully coiffed curls.

Tessa Thompson stole the show in her metallic rainbow gown by Rose Assoulin, and her slicked back blunt bob perfectly complimented the look. Tessa didn’t share the details behind her dress or hair, but take a look at our guide on how to create the “wet” hair look on any hair texture!

Issa Rae

Y’all — 2017 is Issa Rae’s year! Insecure’s second season was a hit, she recently became a Covergirl, and she is just all-around #goals. Last night, Issa was glowing in her red Vera Wang gown and chic twisted bun done by Felicia Leatherwood (@lovingyourhair). Felicia is Issa’s longtime stylist and has created all of our favorite natural hair looks on everybody’s favorite awkward black girl. Felicia didn’t share the exact products she used to create Issa’s look, but she’s been known to use the Eden Body Works line along with her self-made detangler brush.

Cecily Tyson

We can’t forget about the G.O.A.T., Cecily Tyson, who continues to slay at 92 years old. Cecily is known to switch up her style, and I absolutely love her pixie and brightly hued dress with those slit sleeves. Plus, she and Anika Noni Rose gave us one of the best moments of the night.

Yara Shahidi

Yara Shahidi was gorgeous in her custom-made Prada gown that looked fit for a goddess. Her stylist Jason Bolden slicked back Yara’s long, curly hair (see a trend here?), which let her gown and fierce cat eye have the stage. For the after party, Jason pulled Yara’s hair into a low bun for a super chic look.

Tracee Ellis Ross

Tracee rocked a silver, feathered Chanel Haute Couture gown paired with her signature bold cat eye, naturally radiant skin and a nude lippie. But, I really loved her cornrows done by @marciahamilton, which was pulled back into a low chignon.

Zoe Kravitz

#emmys. Such an honor to be there with my girls tonight. #biglittlelies

Just as soon as we got used to her blonde hue, Zoe Kravitz switched it up and went back to black, which went perfectly with her feathered Dior dress.

Gabrielle Union

We ain’t playing wit y’all #emmys2017

Gabrielle smoldered in a lacey, semi-see thru gown and heavily jeweled neckline. Larry Sims (@larryjarahsims) created her uber-voluminous ponytail that gave off glam 70s vibes.
