5 brown-girl-friendly fall makeup trends

By  |

Fall is (unofficially) here, so that means it’s time to ditch the bright and bubbly hues of summer in favor of lush, dusky and opulent shades that match the mood of the new season.

Sweet Berries

@makeupshayla

This color comes back, again and again, each fall and it’s for good reason — it adds instant drama to any look and it looks gorgeous on all skin tones. Makeup Shayla is wearing Dose of Colors’ Desi x Katy liquid lipstick in Savage, but you can find berry-toned lipsticks anywhere! Check out NARS’ Powermatte Lip Pigment in Rock With You or Milani’s Metallic Lip Creme in Plum.

Don’t like dramatic lips? You can play with berry-toned eyeshadows for a colorful smokey eye. Check out Maybelline x Shayla’s City Mini Palette for an affordable option.

Make It Pop!

@strashme

Smokey eyes rule the fall, but it doesn’t mean you have to totally throw color to the side. Instead of doing a neon purple, opt for a warm vibrant royal purple. No time for sky blue liner? Go for a rich colbalt shade with a bit of sparkle. Smoke out your lower and upper lash lines with a creamy black or dark brown liner for a smoldering look. Check out Sephora’s pro palettes or Juvia’s Place’s Masquerade palette for on-trend color selections.

More light, please!

@nymatang

Highlighter isn’t going anywhere this fall, but instead of using lighter champagne, gold and rose gold tones, it’s time to pick up bronzy metallic tones to give a warm flush to the skin. Lucky for us, Rihanna is releasing her Fenty Beauty line this Friday, and she has an array of highlighters and 40 foundation shades for us to play with. Pick up her higlighters in “Trophy Wife,” “Ginger Binge” or “Moscow Mule.”

(Super) Dramatic Liner

@laur_elyse

Again, fall is the perfect time to kick up the drama! Dramatic, graphic eyeliner has been ruling the runways, and you can rock this look with a steady hand and the right products. You don’t have to go all out like @laur_elyse, but draw on 60s eyeliner trends (think Twiggy) to add a little “umph” to your eyes. Check out NYX’s “That’s The Point” line for a budge-proof formula matched with various tip sizes and shapes to create bold looks in a cinch.

Perfectly Smudged

@sonjdradeluxe

Smudged eye looks will be all the rage this fall, as they give off a sexy, sultry vibe. You can do a classic, black smokey eye like @sonjdradeluxe, or get really wild with shimmery or matte jewel-toned emerald, sapphire, amethyst and ruby shades. If you want to stay true to what’s on the runway, go for a slightly messier, more blown out blend — kind of what it looks like when you sleep in your makeup overnight — but better.
