Our 10 favorite looks from “Black Girls Rock!”

By  |

“Black Girls Rock!” airs tonight on BET with Taraji P. Henson taking on the hosting duties of the event that’s been honoring black girl magic for over 10 years. The taping happened a couple weeks ago, and I’m excited to see ladies such as Representative Maxine Waters, Issa Rae, and Roberta Flack be honored for their political and artistic and cultural work.

Beyond tuning in for the awards, the music, and other performances, we all love to see how our favorite celebs slayed the red carpet. Here are our 10 favorite looks from the night:

Taraji debuted her curly tapered cut a few weeks ago, and I’m in love with it! The cinnamon hue perfectly complements her skin and makes her look lit from within. Plus, this blue high-slit dress with the deep neckline and cut outs over her shoulders is sexy and classy and definitely reminds me that I need to go to the gym.

Issa Rae has been on the glow up this year and she’s become a natural hair chameleon thanks to her stylist Felicia Leatherwood. This curly fro and floor length see-thru dress are giving me major 70s goddess vibes and we’re loving it! Short hair stunners can achieve this look with a carefully cut wig or by adding curly extensions to the hair.

Of course, we’ve got to honor Representative Maxine Waters, who’s come to be lovingly known as Queen Maxine. She’s been doing political work for years now, but she gained popularity amongst Millennials for her tenacity in fighting Donald Trump and giving us life mottos along the way — I’ve said “I’m reclaiming my time” countless times in the past couple weeks! Beyond inspiring us to get politically involved, Queen Maxine shows that the slay doesn’t stop when you get older. She’s on trend with her monochromatic red ensemble and we can only hope to keep our side swept bangs in place like her.

Keyshia Kaoir has been a roll this awards season! She’s steady rocking chic short hair looks and gorgeous nude toned dresses with just enough glitz and glam. Her dress was designed by Zuhair Murad, her makeup comes from her cosmetic line, and she was mum about the stylist who wonderfully crafted this high drama pixie. Maybe one day she’ll let us in on her secret!

Supermodel Ebonee Davis rocked the red carpet in a simple dress by Sukeina, a classic red lip by Beau Derrick and a perfectly coiffed TWA. Davis has risen to stardom this year not only because of her groundbreaking fashion campaigns but also because of her outspokenness about beauty standards and having more representation in the fashion industry. Kudos to you, girl!

Anika is known for her super sweet, classic style, but she turned it up a notch with a mohawk by @cynthiaglam! The deep auburn hue makes her skin pop, and the makeup by @makeupbyjay allows the striking color to take center stage.

Ty Alexander has been one of my favorite bloggers for years, namely because she is all about embracing yourself — even when it doesn’t match what society deems to be beautiful. Her natural gray mane was perfectly curled as always, and she kept it funky and chic by mixing stripes and floral prints.

Regina Hall can truly do no wrong! Her cobalt blue dress by @zacposen, mermaid eyes by @priscillaono and wavy bob by @oscarjames hair was perfect for the night as she presented an award with her “Girls Trip” costars.

We’re all rooting for you girl (In my Tyra Banks voice)! Tiffany Haddish stole the show in “Girls Trip,” and she only seems to be gaining momentum. She’s rocking an @ottdubai dress and @gucci shoes and her sleek topknot was done by @oscarjameshair. My favorite part of this look is the @ceecode clutch that boldly says: “A-lister.” Claim it, Tiffany!

To be honest, I’m not familiar with Michelle Mitchenor, who’s a star on “Lethal Weapon” and “Tales.” But her citron dress by @carlosantoine blunt bob by @aliciafajardohair gave me major fashion and hair envy. Hopefully, we’ll see more of her on the red carpet as she slays eye-catching and daring looks.
