5 Tips For Maintaining Your Relaxer During The Summer
This goes out to all my relaxed short haired beauties — You are not forgotten, girl! Natural hair has become a growing trend over the past couple of years, with a bevy of bold and beautiful styles and a slew of product lines geared towards natural hair types.
Relaxed hair is still around, but has taken a bit of a backseat since there’s the idea that your hair can’t be relaxed and healthy. Often times, the idea of relaxed hair brings upon negative stigmas such as hair loss, breakage, hair thinning, and even stunting hair growth. But it’s important to note that all these stigmas are often times the outcome of relaxers that are not taken care of properly.
But no worries my relaxed beauties! Here are a few easy tips to maintaining you short relaxed look through the summer and anytime during the year!
Keep your hair moisturized!
One of the keys to having healthy, relaxed hair is making sure you keep your gorgeous locks moisturized and hydrated. Some relaxers (no-lye) contain calcium hydroxide, which is known to dry out your strands because it’s stripping the natural oils away. Use shampoos and conditioners that are made especially for chemically processed hair, and use a lightweight oil to keep your hair moisturized without weighing it down. This will prevent split ends and overall hair loss.
Get a trim!
This is important when it comes to maintaining length and the overall health of your hair. When you hold on to split ends and/or damaged hair, you’re putting your new growth at risk. Untreated split ends can result in a larger split right up the shaft of your hair, which will stunt your hair’s growth. But since short haired divas are always cutting, this tip should come easy!
Invest in proper at-home haircare tools.
Why not take the salon home and continue the upkeep? It’s the best way to keep that fresh out the salon look! The next time you’re at the salon, ask your beautician about the products and tools she or he is using on your hair (I personally love Design Essentials). Have them write down some quick and easy instructions for at-home upkeep between appointments.
Sleep with your scarf on, girl!
Hair scarves are our best friend! Always tie your hair down at night or use a silk pillow. During the summer months, a silk scarf will maintain your edges and keep them laid — no heat or heavy gels needed!
Go to the salon.
This too is an investment but well worth it! It’s tempting to mosey down the Wal-Mart (or Target) aisle and grab a box of relaxer for a fraction of the price of going to a salon. But, beauticians know hair! They have the education, training, and experience to keep your hair healthy while maintaining a relaxer. Every two weeks to once a month is a good time span to regularly go see your beautician! They know best!
See — you can have relaxed and healthy hair after all! Just follow these 5 quick easy tips this summer and you’ll be set, girl!
