Crucial Conversations: 5 Questions to Ask Your Colorist
Changing your hair color is kind of a big deal. Whether this is your first time giving color a go or you’re ready to switch things up, it’s crucial to have an open and honest conversation with your colorist anytime you’re about to introduce a new color to your tresses. Here are five questions to ask your colorist during your consultation — which you should DEFINITELY have before anything goes down.
1. What certification or training do you have for coloring hair?
It’s nice to rest easy knowing that your colorist has gone the extra mile(s) to educate themselves on the coloring process so they can provide the best service that marries the art with the science of hair coloring.
2. How long will it take to complete the hair color process?
You don’t want to get in the chair for your new color only to find it’s going to take hours longer than you anticipated or wanted to spend in the salon.
3. Which hair color will work best for me?
The last thing you want is to be stuck with a hue that doesn’t compliment your undertones (that’s a good buzz word to look for your colorist to use). Feel free to bring color inspiration to help your colorist pinpoint what will work best for you.
4. What products or treatments should I use to maintain my color at home?
Coloring your hair may alter its texture, thus the products that you should be using will change. Be prepared to overhaul your product selection for the sake of your hair healthy and color preservation.
5. How much maintenance does my color require?
There’s no point in going with a color that requires more daily upkeep and salon visits (read: time and money) than you’re able and/or willing to sacrifice. Your colorist can work with you to find a happy medium that fits your lifestyle.
