Chopping It Up
Chopping it up with Nicole Ari Parker
Nicole Ari Parker has been slaying the silver screen and the small screen for years with her sharp acting skills and characters that are fabulous, yet familiar. But, Nicole has become just as famous for her impeccable fashion and hairstyles, which range from long, flowing locks to razor sharp short cuts that always look fly.
A few weeks ago, Nicole attended the Ubiquitous Beauty and Hair Expo where she shared her “Gym Wrap,” a product that inspires women to get fit while staying fly. We were able to catch up with her before the event, and here’s what she had to say:
You know how to rock a great short cut and always look great no matter how short. What are some of your favorite products when rocking your short hair?
I loved my rockstar pixie cut by Derek J when I lived in Atlanta. Now I change my look so much (braids by @hairbyphatara, twists by @xpressyourkink, natural updos by @lovingyourhair and blowouts by christian javaun), if I want to rock the short cut, I will have Kiyah Wright make me a fierce wig. For short or long hair, I love a good edge product like the ones by Hicks and Mielle Organics and Curls.
Who is your biggest hair inspiration?
My daughter Sophie, she has the biggest thickest best hair ever.
What inspired you to create the Gym Wrap wrap?
I was brainstorming about the idea of how to solve the hair / fitness dilemma. In fact its first name was called Save Your Do. At that same time, I was working in it with the surgeon general who had linked hairstyle preservation to growing health concerns nationwide. We basically weren’t working out or staying fit because of our hair! I really wanted to figure it out so I just started making one at home. I made 18 different ones.
What was the best part about creating Gym Wrap?
The testing of each prototype on real people and workout groups…. fine tuning…trying to make it work for all the different types of customer…all ages all races…the athlete, the fitness enthusiast, the woman who sweats at night, or just the errand runner who wants to keep her hair in place. I also know that we change our styles from braids to blow outs to weaves and I wanted it to work with each style, that’s why I created the tie feature. You can wear the Gym Wrap however you need to.
Why is owning your own definition of beauty, hair and health important to you?
Like the saying goes, ‘Be yourself…Everyone else is already taken.’
