5 quick weekend girlfriend getaways near you

By  |

It’s almost the end of July, which means summer vacay season is almost over. Boo. But, don’t let the last few weeks of summer pass by without having a last hoorah with your girlfriends in these five fun weekend destinations!

Northeast: Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C. is one of my favorite cities on the East Coast — the city’s vibe, food and history make it the perfect place to have a fun weekend trip with the ladies. During the day, check out the national monuments and memorials, and explore the Smithsonian museums all for free. Then, hop on over to Georgetown for some one-of-a-kind boutique shops and swanky restaurants with brunch, lunch and dinner menus to die for.

Southeast: Destin, Florida

While everyone else is flocking to Miami, head on over to Destin, which is on the northwest coast of Florida. Nestled by the Gulf of Mexico, the pace is slower than other popular Florida hot spots, but it doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. Get a tan while sipping on Mimosas on the beach, head out to the water for parasailing or try your hand at fishing, since Destin is known as “the world’s luckiest fishing village.” You can stay at one of Destin’s resorts, or rent a beach house for a more cozy feeling.

South: New Orleans, Lousiana

Most people flock to New Orleans for Mardi Gras or the Essence Festival, but NOLA is always live — no matter what time of year it is. Hit up popular tourist areas such as Bourbon, Canal, and Frenchmen streets, and feel free to wander in and out of clubs and live music venues all night long — most places have no cover charge! Or, immerse yourself in NOLA’s rich history by checking out places like Jackson Square or taking tours of Treme — the iconic African-American neighborhood that birthed so much of New Orleans music and traditions. Of course, great food and drinks are a plenty, so get adventurous try whatever restaurants looks good to you.

Southwest: Phoenix, Arizona

Quit waiting to exhale, and head to Phoenix for a relaxing weekend in the desert. The ultimate black girlfriend movie, “Waiting to Exhale,” was filmed there and it’s just as beautiful there now as it was back in ’95. Of course, you can explore Phoenix’s vibrant nightlife, but take a stroll of the beaten path and make it a point to enjoy nature by exploring the area’s desert preserves and hiking areas. Afterward, you can head to one of the many world-class spas in Paradise Valley for a little TLC.

West Coast: Portland, Oregon

If you’re a foodie, a sucker for craft beer or a lover of artsy knick-knacks and hangouts, then Portland is for you. Portland is known for its vibrant food truck scene. In a matter of hours, you can “travel” all around the world by tasting fare from Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Mexican, French, Morrocan and Ethiopian cultures. After you’ve gotten your fill of delicious food, do a bar crawl to taste some of Portland’s world-famous beer or go on a wine tour Portland’s wineries and vineyards.
