Ask The Expert: I’m Scared To Do The Big Chop!

By  |
Q via @simone_nicolee_: I’m a senior in high school and I’m growing out my perm. I’m getting tired of trying to manage two types of hair but lack the confidence to do a big chop. Advice?
A via @iamjaelroumain: Although the big chop can be scary, it will be the best and healthiest choice for your hair. Once you cut the relaxer out of your hair, you will have instant gratification. Your hair will feel healthier and be easier to manage if you use the right products. The big chop is a like a breath of fresh air. I do recommend having at least 3-4 inches of new growth before doing the big chop. Having that length gives you the option to be versatile. What I mean by that is that you can still wear your protective sew-ins or wigs as your healthy natural hair grows underneath. Extensions, especially wigs, are a great alternative when you’re natural. With this regimen, you will find it easy to embrace your natural coils and still alternate between protective styles of wigs and weaves.

I want a natural short hair cut but I need a stylist in Queens New York who is affiliated with “The Cut Life”. As I love your short hair styles. Can you recommend anyone?
