Ask The Expert: Do I Need A Relaxer If I Want A Pixie Cut?

By  |

Q via @__jaecamille: Is it absolutely necessary to get a relaxer if you want something super short, like a pixie cut?

A: It is necessary to get a relaxer if you want a super short pixie cut. The only exception is if your hair is straight or loose waved. Hair that’s wavy, curly, or coily will not lay down smoothly to create a polished pixie.

Actually, this expert is wrong. See the versatility of natural hair being straightened without a relaxer to form a pixie cut below. You need a talented stylist that knows how to style different types of hair. You do not need a relaxer for a pixie.

I agree that she is wrong. Stylist tried to tell me that and i said no to relaxer with my tight curly hair. It came out great and she was also amazed that while it may not be bone straight, my natural hair added definition and it curled nicely. Sometimes it’s the comfort zone of the stylist. Stylist need to learn how to work with natural hair and not always throw relaxer in it.
